Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has officially begun production of the facelifted Model Y at its Shanghai plant, after the SUV (sport utility vehicle) model completed the full regulatory process in China.
“Production of the new Model Y has officially started at Gigafactory Shanghai. Deliveries coming soon,” Tesla Asia wrote on X today.
Tesla China posted the same brief content on Weibo.
Tesla launched the facelifted five-seat Model Y in China on January 10 and began offering two variants it calls the Launch Series.
Its Chinese website previously indicated that deliveries of the facelifted Model Y were expected to begin in March, pending regulatory approval.
Yesterday, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released three new documents, and the Model Y was included in a catalog of models eligible for purchase tax reductions, meaning that the model completes the full regulatory process for sales in China.
Production of the new Model Y has officially started at Gigafactory Shanghai.

Earlier today, an update on Tesla’s Chinese website showed that deliveries of the new Model Y would begin in late February, and the current Launch Series will be on sale for a limited time until February 28, as it was previously.
Tesla’s Shanghai factory produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y, both delivering to local customers and serving as an export hub for it.
Current delivery wait times for all three variants of the Model 3 remain at 1-3 weeks.
Tesla China sold 63,238 vehicles in January, including 29,535 for export, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 33,703 vehicles in China’s domestic market in January, down 15.49 percent from 39,881 in the same month a year ago and down 59.36 percent from 82,927 in December.
The Model Y sold 25,694 units in China in January, and the Model 3 sold 8,009 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
For the full year 2024, the Model Y sold 480,309 units in the Chinese domestic market, contributing 73.10 percent of Tesla’s 657,102 sales locally in China.
