The Galaxy E5 is a compact SUV, the first to feature Geely’s Aegis Short Blade Battery, and will target global markets.
Geely Auto Group has launched a new model in the Galaxy lineup, the E5, a compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) that will also be available in overseas markets.
Geely rolled out the Galaxy E5, an all-electric SUV with a starting range of 440 kilometers and a starting price of RMB 112,800 yuan ($15,750), at a launch event in Guiyang, Guizhou province in southwest China yesterday.
The compact SUV will be aimed at the global market, with right-hand drive variants available in addition to the left-hand drive model available in China.
Specifically, the Geely Galaxy E5 is available in five variants in China with starting prices of RMB 112,800, RMB 122,800, RMB 128,800, RMB 138,800 and RMB 148,800 respectively.
The model measures 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.
Its five variants have the same powertrain with a motor that produces 160 kW of peak power and 320 Nm of peak torque, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds.
The two less expensive variants are powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 49.52 kWh and offer a CLTC range of 440 km. The other three variants have a battery pack with a capacity of 60.22 kWh and a CLTC range of 530 kilometers.
The battery is Geely’s Aegis Short Blade Battery, which was unveiled on June 27, and the Galaxy E5 is the first model to be powered by this lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry-based power battery cell.
The battery cell has an energy density of 192 Wh/kg and a cycle life of up to 3,500 cycles, which is equivalent to driving 1 million kilometers with little impact on range, Geely said in June.
Consumers who order the Galaxy E5 before October 1 can enjoy a RMB 3,000 discount, available on all five variants.
One of the Geely Galaxy E5’s main competitors is BYD‘s (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) Yuan Plus, which is currently priced from RMB 119,800 to RMB 147,800, with 430km and 510km CLTC range options.
Galaxy is Geely’s new product array launched on February 23, 2023, to target the mainstream plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicle markets.
Geely will launch a cumulative total of seven models in the Galaxy range by 2025, including four plug-in hybrid models in the L-series and three pure electric models in the E-series, it said at the launch of the new product lineup.
The Galaxy L7 SUV and the Galaxy L6 sedan were already launched in 2023, both of which are hybrid models. On January 5 of this year, the Galaxy E8 all-electric sedan was launched.
The Galaxy lineup sold 16,704 vehicles in July, up 66.08 percent year-on-year and up 4.56 percent from June, according to figures released by Geely earlier in the month.
