China’s retail penetration of passenger NEVs was 39.6 percent in December and 35.7 percent in 2023, according to preliminary CPCA data.
China’s passenger new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold 936,000 units at retail in December, up 46 percent year-on-year and up 11 percent from November, preliminary data released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed.
This is the fifth consecutive month of record-high passenger NEV sales in China. The CPCA expected the figure to be around 940,000 units in its report at the end of December.
For the full year 2023, China’s passenger NEV retail sales were 7.744 million units, up 36 percent year-on-year, according to the CPCA.
Wholesale sales of China’s passenger NEVs were 1.122 million units in December, up 49 percent year-on-year and up 17 percent from November.
For the full year of 2023, wholesale sales of passenger NEVs in China were 8.895 million units, up 37 percent year-on-year.
Retail sales of all passenger vehicles in China were 2,361,000 units in December, up 9 percent year-on-year and up 14 percent from November.
For the full year 2023, retail sales of passenger vehicles in China were 21.706 million units, up 6 percent year-on-year, the CPCA’s preliminary data showed.
This means that China’s passenger NEV penetration at retail was 39.6 percent in December, down from 40.4 percent in November. For the full year 2023, that penetration is 35.7 percent.
China’s passenger vehicle wholesale sales were 2.796 million units in December, up 24 percent year-on-year and up 10 percent from November.
In 2023, China’s passenger car wholesale sales were 25.611 million units, up 10 percent year-on-year.

In the first week of December — December 1-10, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 47,485 units, up 7 percent from a year ago and up 8 percent from the same period last month.
In the second week of December — December 11-17, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 66,770 units, up 2 percent from a year ago and up 14 percent from the same period last month.
In the third week of December — December 18-24, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 83,244 units, up 11 percent from a year earlier and up 38 percent from a month earlier.
In the fourth week of December — December 25-31, average daily retail sales of passenger cars in China were 119,441 units, up 13 percent from a year ago while down 11 percent from the same period last month.
