GM is discontinuing the Ultium branding The company plans to introduce new battery options, including a cheaper pack using the LFP chemistry that’s common in China. GM estimates the switch will contribute to a cost savings of as high as $6,000 from one EV generation to the next. The race is on for cheap EVs. Seriously—almost every automaker is hellbent on duking it out to get cheaper EVs on the road, especially to compete with cheaper Chinese vehicles on America’s doorstep. It looks like General Motors may have finally found a way to cut costs significantly on the most expensive…
General Motors will drop the Ultium name from the modular EV batteries and related components used in all of the automaker’s current and planned U.S.-market electric vehicles, CNBC reported on Tuesday. The hardware will remain the same, but GM will erase the Ultium name other than for production operations such as its Ultium Cells LLC battery joint venture with LG, according to the report. CNBC cited statements from the automaker made ahead of an investor conference Tuesday in which the rebranding was expected to be made official. 2025 GMC Hummer EV “As GM continues to expand its EV business, the…

The Mercedes-Benz EQB is not a particularly great electric car to buy new. (Yes, is; they still make it.) A base 2024 EQB 250+ starts at $53,050, offering a front-wheel-drive powertrain and an okay range of 251 miles. If you want a dual-motor model with some decent options, you’ll easily encroach upon the $60,000 range. But here’s the deal: the Mercedes-Benz EQB isn’t a bad car; it just costs way too much money brand new. But you can always opt for a used one. And used EQBs are far more affordable. There are now numerous EQBs listed for sale below the…
After quickly winning critical acclaim in its initial model year, the 2024 Kia EV9 has been recalled due to a software issue with the remote smart parking system in some of these EVs. The recall affects 12,400 EV9 GT-Line and Land models that have the feature, which allows the SUV to be maneuvered in and out of spaces remotely, with the driver standing outside the car and holding a button on the key fob. In the affected vehicles, software may miscalculate stopping distances, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 2024 Kia EV9 This condition, which is due…

Rivian rolled out a big new software update this week. It includes tri-zone climate control and fun new animations for drive settings. Plus, Rivian owners can now watch a live feed of what’s around their vehicle right in the Rivian app. The worst part about modern “software-defined vehicles” is that automakers can promise upcoming updates that never arrive. See, for example, Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving.” Or the notoriously half-baked Fisker Ocean. On the other hand, it’s awesome that owners of certain cars can now download legitimately useful new features over time. For example, Rivian started rolling out a software update on Wednesday,…
