2024 is shaping up to be a make-it-or-break-it year for any automaker in the EV game. GM is no exception. Its Ultium platform rollout still isn’t going all that well. As a result, it’s pivoting to a more diverse portfolio that includes hybrids. The Goliath is shifting some of its EV plans and supposedly canceling some of its more interesting products in the pipeline, too, according to a new report from Autoweek. Autoweek reports that GM is low-key in crisis mode, rejiggering its full-size truck program to accommodate a PHEV model. It’s not clear what kind of PHEV this will be. It could…
At the media launch of the all-new 2024 Honda Prologue, I knew drive time would be fairly limited. Honda folks had us scheduled to scoot around on their suitcase-sized e-scooter for roughly as long as we had with the actual vehicle we all came to drive. But towards the end of our couple hours with the vehicle, we decided to make a beeline to the local Electrify America quick charger. Not realizing until later that other groups of drivers had been asked not to DC quick charge these Prologues. Whoops. Get Fully Charged Fast charging has been a challenge for…
In countries where electric cars have been successfully democratized, like China, for example, affordability is inextricably linked to low raw material prices. In the U.S., where the road to electrification is far more complex, the impact of increasingly lower raw material prices is expected to truly materialize by the end of the decade, new research by the International Council On Clean Transportation has revealed. EV batteries are expensive. They require critical minerals like lithium, nickel, manganese, and graphite among others to function. Lithium’s demand has skyrocketed in the past few years. So much that it’s often termed “white gold.” Growing environmental…

I once thought that Honda’s EV platform tie-up with General Motors would result in more bespoke products—vehicles that may have shared some things under the skin, but otherwise felt like wholly original products. The Acura ZDX and Honda Prologue looked so much different from what we’ve seen on the Cadillac Lyriq, Chevrolet Blazer EV, or China’s Buick Electra E5. And yet, when the car was revealed past its exterior photos, it became exceedingly clear that Honda and Acura’s EV GM-based EV efforts are way more similar under the skin than meets the eye; a fact validated when we finally got behind…
Recently, I drove from Breckenridge back to San Francisco over two days. At the start of the month, I did the same drive but in the other direction. The weather and traffic were variable, as was the quality of the innumerable podcasts I listened to. But there was one constant: I cursed Electrify America the whole way. To be clear, Electrify America chargers got me where I needed to go. I never once wasn’t able to charge and, while one charger broke the chip on my credit card (I will never know how), I didn’t experience the mass outages or…
GM may soon have Chevy and GMC plug-in hybrid pickups. Dodge considers EVs that have much more than a V-8 soundtrack. And the Honda Prologue remixes GM’s Ultium into its own gateway EV. This and more, here at Green Car Reports. In a first drive of the 2024 Honda Prologue EV, we found that this roomy, refined, and feature-packed electric crossover fits in just fine as an establishing statement toward flashier Honda EVs arriving in the near future. According to a patent filing made last year and recently found via a Mopar fan site, parent company Stellantis may be considering…
General Motors has cancelled plans for more electric vans and a Ford Maverick-sized electric pickup trucks as it undertakes a “crash program” to launch plug-in hybrid pickups, Autoweek reported Tuesday. The automaker has nixed electric replacements for the ancient Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans based on the BrightDrop electric delivery van, according to the report, which cited anonymous sources familiar with the matter. BrightDrop EV600 It’s unclear where this places GM’s BrightDrop unit, which was due to develop a smaller model below its Zevo 400 (originally named EV410). GM has paused production at the Canadian plant for the electric…
Dodge has long hinted that its electric muscle car—which is due to be revealed in production form March 5—will be screaming loud. But a patent filing hints that it may also vibrate like it has a V-8. First spotted by Mopar Insiders (via Jalopnik), Dodge parent Stellantis has filed a patent application for an “Active Vibration Enhancement” system that would “generate vibrations within the vehicle’s structure.” Teaser image of electric Dodge Charger successor According to Mopar Insiders, the system would rely on a scaled-up version of the haptic generators used in smartphones, which vibrate to replicate the sensation of a…
China’s auto market saw seasonal weakness in February as the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday fell in mid-February, the CPCA noted. China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales will continue to plummet in February due to the Chinese New Year holiday, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). In February, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China are expected to be around 380,000 units, down 43 percent from January, according to estimates released today by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Retail sales of passenger NEVs in January were 667,000 units, up 101.8 percent year-on-year, the CPCA said. The sales…
