Owners of Rivian’s R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV will be able to access Tesla Superchargers starting in March, the EV startup announced via X on Thursday.    Previously, Rivian said its customers would be able to start using Tesla’s enormous charging network by this spring. Ford is among the mainstream automakers whose EVs have a 400-volt architecture, and it has never publicly announced plans to launch 800-volt electric models. However, according to a patent filed by the Blue Oval almost four years ago, it is working on a multi-voltage system capable of operating at 800 volts, at least during charging. The patent also mentions two separate battery arrays that would be charged by the multi-voltage charging system. Ford led the industry last year in announcing a shift to the Tesla charge port and its North American Charging Standard (NACS), signaling Ford’s adoption of the NACS charge port in future EVs, while also providing upcoming access to the Tesla Supercharger network for existing Ford EV drivers.  That access is almost here. Ford is also the first to offer adapters, due to ship later in March, through which owners can charge on the Tesla network immediately. Several EVs earned high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 2024, the organization revealed this week. The IIHS toughened requirements to earn its highest Top Safety Pick+ and second-tier Top Safety Pick awards for 2024. Some 71 models still qualified for at least one of the awards, with 22 earning the Top Safety Pick+ award. That compares to 65 models which earned one of the IIHS awards for 2023, when the agency also updated its criteria to make its awards tougher to obtain.
