Geely Automobile Holdings has rolled out a new hybrid model under its Galaxy lineup to compete with BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY).
The automaker today launched the Galaxy L6 EM-i with a starting price of RMB 89,800 ($12,300), powered by the fuel economy-focused Leishen EM-i hybrid system it unveiled last October.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i is offered in five variants with starting prices of RMB 89,800, RMB 92,800, RMB 95,800, RMB 102,800 and RMB 109,800 respectively.
Geely is offering a limited time discount of RMB 3,000 on all variants of the model, available on and before March 31.
After the discount, the starting prices of the five variants of the Galaxy L6 EM-i are RMB 79,800, RMB 89,800, RMB 92,800, RMB 99,800, RMB 106,800, respectively.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i measures 4,782 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width and 1,489 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,752 mm.
It comes with the Leishen EM-i hybrid system released on October 30 last year, which is Geely’s counterpart to BYD’s DM-i system known for its fuel economy.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i has a combined fuel consumption of just 2.9 L per 100 kilometers and a combined range of over 2,000 km, said Geely.
The model is powered by lithium iron phosphate battery packs with two capacity options — 8.5 kWh and 19.09 kWh — with battery ranges of 60 km and 140 km respectively.
It has an engine with a maximum power of 82 kW and a peak torque of 136 Nm. The electric motor has a peak power of 160 kW and a peak torque of 262 Nm.
Galaxy is a new product array launched by Geely Auto on February 23, 2023 to target the mainstream plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicle market.
The Galaxy L6 EM-i’s main competitor is the Qin L DM-i, a BYD model launched in May 2024 that uses the latest BYD DM 5.0 hybrid technology.
The Qin L DM-i is also offered in five variants with a price range of RMB 99,800 to RMB 139,800. On February 10, BYD launched the Smart Driving Edition updates for 21 models with the unchanged prices, including the Qin L.
The Qin L DM-i measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,790 mm.
BYD’s Qin family — which also includes the Qin Plus lineup — sold 732,252 vehicles in 2024, up 51.87 percent year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Geely’s Galaxy lineup sold 361,846 vehicles in 2024, including 69,444 in December.
