China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership has surpassed 20 million, about a year and a half after reaching the 10 million mark.
By the end of 2023, China’s NEV ownership reached 20.41 million, accounting for 6.07 percent of the total vehicle ownership of 336 million, according to data released today by China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
The proportion increased by 1.97 percentage points compared to the end of 2022. At the end of 2022, China’s NEV ownership stood at 13.1 million, accounting for 4.1 percent of the total vehicle ownership of 319 million.
At the end of June 2022, China’s NEV ownership reached 10.1 million vehicles, surpassing the 10 million milestone.
In China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.
By the end of 2023, the number of BEVs in China was 15.52 million, accounting for 76.04 percent of the total number of NEVs.
In 2023, newly registered NEVs amounted to 7.43 million units, a year-on-year increase of 38.76 percent, accounting for 30.25 percent of new vehicle registrations.
In 2023, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China were 7.736 million units, up 36.2 percent year-on-year, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on January 9.
For the full year of 2023, China’s NEV penetration rate at retail is 35.7 percent, up 8.1 percentage points from 2022, according to the CPCA.

By the end of 2023, including motorcycle drivers, the number of motor vehicle drivers in China reached 523 million. The number of automobile drivers was 486 million, accounting for 92.9 percent of the total number of drivers.
