BYD‘s (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) premium brand Yangwang today unexpectedly revealed its first sedan, the U7, without any previous previews.
The Yangwang U7 will be a new energy flagship sedan in the RMB 1 million ($140,000) class, the brand wrote on Weibo.
The sedan’s front end carries over the design of the Yangwang U9 supercar and features a LiDAR on the roof, according to images posted by Yangwang.
The Yangwang U7 will have over 1,000 horsepower and will push the limits of sedan performance, it wrote.
The model will be equipped with e⁴ technology, which will provide precise control and have high safety, Yangwang said.
Yangwang did not provide more information about the Yangwang U7, except for several images.
BYD unveiled the Yangwang brand in January 2023, along with the e⁴ technology platform, saying that the entire future model range of the premium brand will be based on the platform.
The Yangwang U8 off-road SUV, Yangwang’s first production vehicle, went on sale on September 20, 2023, with deliveries beginning on November 24.
The Yangwang U8 has a starting price of RMB 1,098,000 and 408 units were delivered in November and 1,593 in December, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
BYD debuted the Yangwang U9 when it unveiled the Yangwang brand a year ago, with no launch date yet for the electric supercar.
The Yangwang U9 will also be priced in the RMB 1 million range, and it can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in under three seconds, BYD previously said.
The reveal of the Yangwang U7 was a surprise, probably because the model is about to enter China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing catalog in a few days, when its filing images will be released. Typically, filing images are not as exquisitely photographed as the renderings released by automakers.
The model will be another from the local brand priced around RMB 1 million.
Nio unveiled its executive flagship sedan ET9 at Nio Day 2023 on December 23, with a pre-sale price of RMB 800,000 and deliveries set to begin in the first quarter of 2025.
Yangwang did not reveal when the U7 will be launched or its price range.
From the images and little information Yangwang released, the U7 seems to be targeting the sports luxury sedan market, which is different from the executive market that the ET9 is targeting.
